Minnesota Racing Commission Offers up to $200K in Grants for Racehorse Aftercare

The Minnesota Racing Commission announced today that they are accepting proposals for grant funds for facilities that provide racehorse aftercare. The total amount of money available for grants is $200,000 and up to 10 applicants could be awarded funds.

Qualifying applications will be reviewed by the MRC Racehorse Aftercare Committee and industry specialists as it pertains to aftercare.

The minimum requirements according to the MRC are:

  • Be a current 501 (c)(3) charitable organization or in the process of forming a 501(c)(3) organization and has provided information on the organization’s governing board.
  • Be currently accepting into your care and re-homing, rehabilitating, or retraining Thoroughbred, Quarter Horses or Standardbreds that have trained or raced at anMRC licensed racetrack within the last 3 years or broodmares registered in the Minnesota Bred Breeders Fund program.
  • Provide official identifying information on the horses in your care that have been re- homed, rehabilitated, or retrained including, but not limited to:  registered name,tattoo or microchip number, date taken into your organization’s care and date adopted if applicable.
  • Provide a detailed spreadsheet on how funds will be used, such as feed,bedding, veterinary care, farrier work, fencing, and facilities.

On the grant application there a is a checklist that needs to be completed and submitted to the MRC. The deadline for submissions is 4:30 PM Central Time on September 7, 2023.
