Briefs: Iowa Sale Results; Canterbury Shoots for 70 in ’18; Halstrom at Prairie

 

Altoona, IA – The Iowa Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders’ Association sale generated record numbers in October with 51 yearlings generating $475,000 compared to 42 yearlings sold with proceeds of $302,550 in 2016.

The sales topper, consigned by Iowa State University, was Catch Me If You Can sold to Larry Cascio for $55,000, which also made Cascio the leading buyer at the sale in terms of dollars.  Larry Gottula bought nine horses to lead the sale in numbers bought.

ISU was also the leading consigner selling 12 horses for $163,500.

Altoona, IA – In other news out of Iowa, former Fairgrounds and Canterbury Park executive Eric Halstrom took over as Assistant Director of Racing at Prairie Meadows on October 1 under longtime Director of Racing Derron Heldt.

“I’m really happy to be here,” said Halstrom.  “This is a great place and I’m happy to stay in the Midwest where I have a lot of friends and family.”

Halstrom will be a great addition to Prairie Meadows and is anxious to get to work.

“When I started,” he said, “the meet was winding down and after some time off I’m really anxious to get going.”

The end of one meet is only the beginning to getting the groundwork laid for the next and Halstrom will be diving right in prepping for 2018.

 

Shakopee, MN – Canterbury Park has asked the Minnesota Racing Commission for permission to run 70-days in 2018 beginning on May 4 and concluding on September 15 or three more racing days than 2017.

The Commission will tale up the request at the December meeting.
