Featured Race Closer Look: Lady Slipper

Editors’ Note: We have added a handicapping section. Rather than try and pick every race on the card, we will select a feature race of the day and give you our thoughts and selections. Heather is more of an exotic player while Ted is more of a straight win/place, exacta kind of bettor so you’ll get some perspective from both angles. We hope you enjoy and, perhaps, profit a little as well!

Today’s Race: Lady Slipper Stakes (Canterbury Park, Race 7)

Heather’s View:

Sky and Sea (4) – Lone speed and another Rake runner with a race under her saddle. She should shake loose early and lead them home.

Polar Plunge (2) – Dangerous stakes winning mare comes from well off the pace but if no one goes with Sky and Sea she may just be spinning her wheels late.

Thunder and Honey (5) – Chased Sky and Sea in the major 3-year old races last year. She was only beaten a couple in the Oaks, but the favorite wanted nothing to do with a route. Sky and Sea beat Thunder and Honey by 11 ½ in the Genter sprint.

Stellabrini (8) – Runner on the outside was also closer in the Oaks than in the Genter but should be able to track well enough to get a piece of the super.

Ted’s View:

If there was any type of speed in this race besides Sky and Sea (4), I might go with Polar Plunge (2) for some value but I just don’t see the favorite being pushed hard enough early to not be able to hang on late. Her last race looks bad on paper, which could be good for value, but don’t let it sway you at all: she was running against the boys and she also got roughed up a bit by her stablemate, Bourbon County. She’s back with the ladies, back with the state breds and doesn’t have the big bully to contend with and – as mentioned earlier, she’s the lone speed in a six furlong dash. With all she has going for her, including red hot jockey Dean Butler, it will be hard to beat her.
