Featured Race Closer Look: 10,000 Lakes Stakes

Editors’ Note: We have added a handicapping section. Rather than try and pick every race on the card, we will select a feature race of the day and give you our thoughts and selections. Heather is more of an exotic player while Ted is more of a straight win/place, exacta kind of bettor so you’ll get some perspective from both angles. We hope you enjoy and, perhaps, profit a little as well!

Today’s Race: The 10,000 Lakes Stakes (Canterbury Park, Race 7)

Heather’s View :

Bourbon County (7) —Comes in rested, but with a race under his saddle. I think we all agree that Bourbon gets better with age and he is all the speed in this group.

Affirmed Cure (1) —Handles traffic well and is a versatile, hard trying equine athlete that should not be left off exotics

Command the Land (2) —Comes into Rhone barn and been training steadily after some time off.   Wildcat Ranch bred gelding picks up jockey J. Carreno

Speakfromyourheart (4) —Won the 2014 edition with a late charge in the lane at decent odds. Training well at Remington and looks ready to roll.

Superfecta Box: 7-1-2-4

Ted’s View:

I really like it when I see that a horse comes into a new season at Canterbury with a race under its belt. You can train up to a race all you want but there is no tightner like a race. Bourbon County (7) was nipped at the wire last year by Speakfromyourheart (4). Maybe he was worn down by Heliskier or maybe he was a bit short in his first race after the winter off. One thing is guaranteed here: he is not going to be short.

The outside post probably isn’t ideal but there isn’t a single horse in here that’s going to get away and shake loose. If anything, Speed is Life (3) and Appeal to the King (5) may break alertly enough to give Dean Butler a nice spot to settle in and track into the turn. Once they turn for home, I don’t see him getting caught this year.
