Maidens Aplenty in Pepsi Stakes at Fonner

Half the field in the $15,000 Pepsi Stakes will be searching for their first win this afternoon at Fonner Park.  However the top few in the 6 furlong stake for 3-year old fillies are accomplished enough that they will probably have to wait for another day to see the winners’ circle.

Pointguard Rylie, Emmy Got Even, Second Sight and Discreet Deputy are all looking to break their maidens in the Pepsi.  Of that group, Discreet Deputy showed the most promise as a 2-year old, hitting the board at both Prairie Meadows and Canterbury Park in maiden special weight contests while Second Sight looks to be racing into form as of late.

They’ll all be trying to catch Misty Kitten.  After a couple of lackluster efforts at 2 at Remington Park, she launched her 3-year old campaign with a maiden breaking win at Sam Houston and followed that up with a win over the local strip here in an non-winners of 2 allowance.  She tried to follow-up that gate to wire victory with another front running performance in a non-winners of 3 allowance but unable to maintain the lead late, though she gave way grudgingly.

Dancing with Silver is another that started her 3-year old season with a maiden breaker.  She followed that up with 2 strong seconds in allowance company, unable to hold leads late in the stretch.  All three races were at 4 furlongs and the extra 2 furlongs in the Pepsi may prove to be too much.

Larry Donlin trainee Jesa Plain Jane started her career with a win in a Fargo stake in her only start as a 2-year old but debuted in 2015 with a lackluster effort in an allowance.

The Pepsi is the 9th race on the card with a scheduled post of 5:22 Central Time.
