Butler Fundraiser
There will be a benefit fundraiser this evening for injured jockey Dean Butler at Pablo’s Mexican Restaurant in Shakopee, MN from 9:30 – 11:30. Butler went down on June 30th when his mount broke down in the lane. He fractured 3 vertebrae and has been out of action since and most likely will be until Tampa Bay Downs season begins at the end of the year. Tickets are $10 each and there will also be a 50/50 raffle and a silent auction.
Lady Tapestry Euthanized
Minnesota broodmare Lady Tapestry, winner of the 2000 Minnesota Distaff Classic, was euthanized yesterday due to an abdominal tumor. The stakes winning mare had come from far out of it and overcame late trouble to win the 2000 Distaff after placing 2nd the year before. She also notched a pair of third place finishes in the Princess Elaine Stakes. She had four foals – all of whom made it to the track and were winners, earning $190,609. Daughter Bad River Belle finished third in the 2013 Northern Lights Debutante. Her last foal, Unbridled Mayhem, won today’s second race at Canterbury Park leading to an emotional winners’ circle for owner Rake Farms and former owner Mary Green.
Hot Shot Kid to Mystic Lake?
Trainer Mac Robertson’s Minnesota Derby winner Hot Shot Kid worked over the turf course this morning in company with stablemate multiple stakes winner Majestic Pride fueling speculation that the 3-year old will pass on Festival of Champions Day tomorrow in favor of the $200,000 Mystic Lake Derby next Saturday evening. Hot Shot Kid, under Alex Canchari, worked the five furlongs in 1:01.04.
Closing Day Adjusted
Canterbury Park announced that the last day of live racing will once again be Saturday, September 16 after the cancellation of the concert that originally necessitated changing closing weekend to Thursday/Friday rather than Friday/Saturday. The Shakopee Juvenile will now again be run on Saturday with the Tom Metzen HBPA Sprint. Friday will host the John Bullit Stakes. Post time on Friday is 5 PM with racing to begin on Saturday at 12:45 PM.
