Quarter Horse Stakes Action at Canterbury Tuesday

SHAKOPEE, MN – Tuesday evening Canterbury Park will host another full card of quarter horse racing beginning at 4:30 PM.  The twelve-race card will feature five stakes races including the headlining $86,900 Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity and the $48,775 Canterbury Park Quarter Horse Derby.

Race 5 – $48,775 Canterbury Park Quarter Horse Derby – 400 yards

The stakes action kicks off in the 5th with the QH Derby.  The fastest qualifier belongs to owner Richard Tobin and trainer Jason Olmstead, Vf Politics N Chicks (19.81).  All time leading quarter horse rider at Canterbury, Nik Goodwin, picks up the ride.

The morning line favorite is Tipsy Girl B.  Another Olmstead trainee, owned by Bill Maher and Paul Luedemann, was qualified by Goodwin and will be ridden in the final by Luis Valenzuela.

Race 6 – $86,900 Mystic Lakes Northlands Futurity – 350 yards

The Northlands Futurity is the richest quarter horse purse of the meet. Leading trainer Jason Olmstead qualified six of the 10 entrants in trials held July 28 including the second fastest qualifier A Fabulos Painting, owned in part by Minnesota Wild goaltender Alex Stalock.

A Fabulos Painting had been winless in three career starts prior to winning his trial heat under jockey Nik Goodwin. The connections are hopeful that theOne Fabulous Eagle gelding will remain calm, cool and collected prior to the race and save his race for the racetrack and not the paddock.

The fastest qualifier is Jess One Lane trained by Vic Hanson and ridden by Ismael Suarez Ricardo. The colt has won two of four starts and was third as the betting favorite in the July 7 MQHRA Stallion Auction Futurity. He broke sharply in that race but made a costly cut to the inside and was beaten three-quarters of a length. “He drifted to the rail and that was that,” Hanson said. His qualifying trip two weeks ago was an improvement. On Tuesday he will break from post nine. “That’s new country for him.  Hopefully he likes it out there. He’s good. He came back good [from the trial],” Hanson said.

Race 7 – $20,000 Mystic Lake Northlands Juvenile – 350 yards

The Juvenile is for horses that didn’t make it to the final of the Mystic Lake Northlands and leading the nine-horse field is One Kool Dreamer.  One Kool Dreamer entered his trial for the Northlands as the odds on favorite but never got untracked, outrun by Jess One Lane.  In between, he ran a good 4th in the MQHRA Futurity, missing by only a length. A repeat of that effort would be good enough to win here.

Race 8 – $15,000 1889 Futurity – 350 yards

The 1889 is a futurity for North and South Dakota breds. The most accomplished is Bob Johnson trained Jess a Wild Time.  The sorrel gelding broke his maiden at Fargo and followed that up with a second-place finish in the NDQHRA Futurity.  Jake Olesiak retains the mount on the move to Minnesota.

Race 11 – $30,000 Bob Morehouse – 350 yards

The two favorites in the Morehouse are the full brothers, Dickey Bob and Pyc Jess Bite Mydust.  Dickey Bob is a two-time winner of this race having won in 2018 and 2019.  Trainer Jason Olmstead is looking for his fourth straight Morehouse having Vodka at Midnight taking the race in 2017.  Dickie Bob will have Luis Valenzuela aboard while Pyc Jess Bite Mydust grabs Goodwin. The boys have had a great rivalry over the years and this year’s Morehouse should be no exception.
