Photo Essay: Skijoring at Canterbury Park

SHAKOPEE, MN – In what has become the most popular winter event at Canterbury Park, Extreme Skijoring has grown exponentially over it’s three year history and drew over 7500 spectators to the Shakopee racetrack last Saturday.

Skijoring is general accepted to have started in Norway in the early 1900s and involves skiers and snowboarders towed behind galloping horses.  At Canterbury there were side by side racing events for snowboarders and skiers, further broken down by skill level. The highlight of the afternoon were the aerial free-stylists who launched themselves off a ramp and performed aerial maneuvers.

Weiner dog racing, a summer staple at Canterbury, made their winter debut at the skijoring event this winter running three heats and a final and, as always, drawing their large crowd of admirers.

We were there to capture the event and below are the views of the day from our photo editor, Heather.
