Minnesota Yearling Sale: Small Sale, Big Results

SHAKOPEE, MN – Trepidation and anticipation gave way to sighs of relief and a stellar, if small, Minnesota yearling sale at Canterbury Park on Sunday afternoon.

Only 18 yearlings passed through the ring compared to 29 last year but the gross sale proceeds were more than $84,000 higher than 2023.

The sales topper was hip number six, a colt out of Mesa Mirage by Runhappy, consigned by Almar Farm and purchased by Carin Offerman.

Offerman was the most active buyer at the sale, buying three yearlings for a total of $124,000.

Almar Farm was also leading consignor in terms of dollars earned, edging out Rick Bremer and Cheryl Sprick by $3,000, with a total of $84,000. Heaven on Earth Farm sold five yearlings to lead consignors in number of yearlings sold.

The median and average sale prices also soared over 2023. In 2023, the median was $7,000 and the average was $13,477 while 2024 brought a median of $21,000 and an average of $24,094.

Of the 22 yearlings that were consigned, 19 made it through the ring and 16 went to new owners.  Of the 16 sold, nine went to three buyers, evenly divided between Carin Offerman, Xtreme Racing and Dave Koch with the other seven spread out amongst seven other buys.

“The sale went really well,” said Jay Dailey of Dailey Realty and Auction which ran the sale for Canterbury Park. “The prices were higher than we expected but this was really a good group of horses.”
