SHAKOPEE, MN – Jockey Berkley Packer swept the pair of Minnesota bred quarter horse stakes on the Friday night Canterbury card.
Blue Eyed Andy broke alertly in the $24,000 Mean Competitor Stakes, seized command through the turn in the seldom run 870 distance under Packer when most of the field had issues with the turn and went on to score a two length victory as the second choice ($6.40).
As the early leaders drifted through the turn, Packer was able to save all the ground and had no issues through the lane to the wire.
“It was an excellent ride by my jock,” said winning trainer Allen Hybsha. “I couldn’t have asked for anything more than that.”
Streakin in the City ($6.20) was second and Hiclass Man ($2.10) was third. Blue Eyed Andy covered the distance in 47.04.
Packer shortened up in the 350 yard Skip Zimmerman Stakes and the result was the same. Breaking alertly on Htr Miamor Tequilla, the duo surged to the front and withheld a late charge by favored Corona Springs to win in 17.59. Htr Miamor Tequilla paid $10.80 for the win. Corona Springs returned $5.00 and Bye Byefrighttrain ($3.20) was third.
