SHAKOPEE, MN – Tuesday night Canterbury Park was devoted to Quarter Horses with a twelve race card including five trials – two for the Canterbury Park Quarter Horse Derby and three for the Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity.

In the trials for the $48,775 Canterbury Park Quarter Horse Derby, trainer Jason Olmstead qualified four, Clinton Crawford three and Vic Hanson, Ed Ross Hardy and Cory Rumsey one each.  The fastest qualifier was Vf Politics N Chicks who covered the 400 yards in 19.817 with Nik Goodwin aboard.

In the trials for the $86,900 Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity, Olmstead qualified six, Crawford two, Hanson and Mark Barnes one each.  Hanson had the top qualifier, Jess One Lane, who ran the 350 yards in 17.987.

Both finals will be run on August 11.

It was a night for some outstanding individual performances as well.  Jockey Ismael Suarez-Ricardo won five of the twelve races on the card.  Trainer Jason Olmstead also notched five wins.  The all time record for training wins is six, held by Bernell Rhone. Jockey Derek Bell had six wins on a card as well to top riders.

Jockey Nik Goodwin made a triumphant return to Canterbury las night as well.  Having not ridden here since last summer, Goodwin came back with a flourish, winning the first three races on the card on his comeback evening.  Goodwin is the all-time Quarter Horse leader in wins at Canterbury.

There was a scary moment last night in the third race when Marcus Swiontek, aboard AJ Helene, was banged into the starting gate and was unseated.  AJ Helene then stepped on his leg near the ankle.  Swiontek was stretchered off the track and transported to a nearby hospital by ambulance.

According to updates from his girlfriend, trainer Stephanie Herb, Swiontek suffered a broken fibula as well as a small bone in his foot.  Thankfully there is no indication for surgery and, as of last evening, he was being fitted for a boot and being sent home to rest and begin his recovery.
