SHAKOPEE, MN – One of the greatest Minnesota breds to ever head to the racetrack, Mr. Jagermeister, retired earlier this year. Bred by trainer Valorie Lund’s sister, Kristin Boice, and owned by Boice and Lund, the seven year old horse led the post parade for the Wally’s Choice on Saturday night to say farewell to fans.
“So many people were asking about him,” said Lund. “We had him here and it made sense to do something for the fans so they could see him one more time.”
In the walking ring, Mr. Jagermeister was calm and cool, but when he came out on the racetrack, to an ovation from the fans, he started to prance and nibble at his pony. He still looked the part of a champion race horse – and one that was ready to head to the gate, not back to the paddock.
Mr. Jagermeister (Atta Boy Roy-Frangelica-Croninthian) was a winner of thirteen races out of thirty seven starts. His stakes wins included these Canterbury Park stakes: a pair of 10,000 Lakes (2018, 2020), the Vic Myers, the Minnesota Derby, the Wally’s Choice as well as the 2019 Crocrock Sprint.
His Stake triumphs were not limited to Minnesota. He also win the 2019 Chesapeake Stakes at Colonial Downs and the 2020 Phoenix Gold Cup at Turf Paradise. In 2018 he finished 2nd to champion Mitole in the Bachelor Stakes at Oaklawn Park.
“There were several people that kept asking me if we were going to do something for him,” said Senior Director of Racing, Andrew Offerman. “We knew he was back there so we worked with Val to find a good spot to be able to do this.”
Mr. Jagermeister was ridden in the post parade by exercise rider Miranda Long.
Currently the connections are looking for a possible stud deal for the accomplished, well-put together horse.
“I think he’d be a good sire in Arkansas,” said Lund. “He really liked the surface at Oaklawn and I think he’d do a really good job there.”
Enjoy your retirement, Mr. Jagermeister, you were one of our best ever.
