SHAKOPEE, MN – Trainer Bob Johnson had won two of the first three runnings of the $22,000 1889 Futurity at Canterbury Park and came into the fourth local running with three entries, the most likely contender of which was Makin It Rayne, who just missed in the North Dakota Quarter Horse Racing Association Futurity against 1889 favorite Redoinit.
As the field was getting ready to be sprung from the gate, Makin It Rayne started acting up and banged herself around in the starting gate. She was scratched by the stewards and Johnson’s seemingly best hope exited the race.
When the field was reloaded and the race finally began, Redoinit was the victim of a rough break, getting pinched hard at the start. Though the sorrel was flying late, there was not enough real estate left in the 350 yard dash to catch 15-1 shot Bhr the Bomb Dot Com and Johnson was able to pick up his third 1889 with Randy Vega aboard.
“She tries every time,” said Johnson of the previously maiden 2-year-old daughter of One Mean Eagle. “She gets herself into trouble and she still tries. She has guts, and that’s what got us here tonight.”
The filly was bred and is owned by Broken Heart Ranch in South Dakota. She covered the 350 yards in 18.28 seconds and paid $32.60 for the win. Redoinit ($3.40) was second and Hidden Charms ($2.60) was third.
