SHAKOPEE, MN – The Quarters will take center stage at Canterbury Park Sunday as four Quarter Horses stakes highlight the ten race card including the $146,400 Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity.
The stakes action kicks off in the second race, the $40,000 Bob Morehouse Stakes. The big favorite in the Morehouse is Pyc Jess Bite Mydust. The 4-year old Apollitical Jess gelding won the North Star State Stakes here earlier in the meet notching a 90 Speed Index.
In the $20,000 Mystic Lake Northlands Juvenile only one 2-year old comes in with a victory in the confirmed field to his or her credit and that is Chocolatepaintedkiss. Trained by Stacy Charette-Hill, the filly has won two of four starts (one coming via a disqualification) and was fourth last out beaten but a neck.
The $78,450 Canterbury Quarter Horse Derby is the fourth race on the card. The morning line favorite is First of 15, a winner of three in a row including the Gopher State Derby two starts back. The second place horse in that race, Painted Dynasty, is also back for the Derby. Both are trained by Jason Olmstead. Marfilmio, who rounded out the trifecta in the Gopher State also qualified strongly for the Derby. Also dangerous in the Derby should be multiple stakes winner A Jordan Reed and the ultra consistent Disco Wagon.
The feature of the day is the $146,400 Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity at a distance of 350 yards.
Top qualifier for the Futurity is the Jason Pascoe trained Mildred Dickinson. The filly came out of her maiden win at Remington Park to win her trail for the Futurity in 17.78 and earning a speed index of 78. The next fastest qualifiers were very close with Maghelene winning her heat in 17.79 just ahead of Miss Energy P in 17.80. Very little separate the top three qualifiers. Maghelene and Miss Energy P drew the one and two posts respectively while Mildred Dickinson is six in the ten horse field.
Other trial winners in the field include Devins Project and Bhr Flashing Effort.
First post on Sunday is 12:45 with the Futurity scheduled for 2:45.
