SHAKOPEE, MN – The longest shot in the race, mired in what, up until today, had been the post of death along the rail, broke like a rocket and Eva the Diva roared to victory in the $86,900 Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity.
“She likes to have horses around her,” said trainer Mark Barnes of the star in his one horse stable. “She isn’t timid at all and in the qualifier she was on the outside and I don’t think she really saw the horses in that race.”
She turned the tables on runner up Whisperalittleprayer ($9.80) and third place finisher A Fabulos Painting ($3.20) who finished ahead of her in their trial. The top three from that heat ended up the top three in the final.
“I was concerned by the draw,” continued Barnes. “I’d be lying to say I wasn’t, but she ran a really good race.”
Eva the Diva paid $62 to win and covered the 350 yards in 17.92 under Julian Serrano.
In the Canterbury Park Quarter Horse Derby, trainer Corey Rumsey sent out Gopher State Derby winner Zoomn On Bye and he repeated his performance, taking the Derby in 19.92 for the 400 yards.
Though breaking fifth, Zoomn On Bye gobbled up ground with his seemingly effortless long stride, propelling him to the half length victory.
“I’ve watched that horse take dirt in the face,” said Rumsey, “but his stride just keeps on lengthening.”
Zoomn On Bye paid $11.60 for the win and was ridden to victory by Ry Eikleberry.
Tipsy Girl B ($4.00) was second and Vf Politics N Chicks ($3.00) was third.
In other stakes action, odds on favorite One Kool Dreamer captured the $20,000 Mystic Lake Northlands Juvenile in 17.90 for trainer Jason Olmstead and jockey Luis Valenzuela.
Trainer Bob Johnson had the first five finishers in the 1889 Futurity with Apollitical Stunner topping the race in 18.20 with Nik Goodwin in the irons.
The last stake of the evening, the Bob Morehouse, was dominated by brothers Dickey Bob and Pyc Jess Bite Mydust, with Dickey Bob holding off his late charging brother by a head. Originally scheduled for 350 yards, the race was contested at 300 and Dickey Bob and Luis Valenzuela covered the distance in 15.43.
Total handle for the twelve race quarter horse card was $544,627. The thoroughbreds return Wednesday night with a nine race card and a first post of 4:35 PM.
