SHAKOPEE, MN – The quarter horse season came to an end at Canterbury Park last week (aside from a pair of MN bred Festival Day stakes) with the 1889 Futurity and the Cash Caravan Stakes.
Six-year-old Dickey Bob, owned by Lunderborg LLC, became the second horse to win the $39,200 Cash Caravan three times (Cracklin Cash 2001-03 was the other), while Lunderborg LLC won the race for the fourth consecutive time. Dickey Bob is now the all-time Minnesota bred quarter horse money earner, having passed brother Pyc Jess Bite Mydust (the fourth Lunderbog Cash Caravan winner) after a win at Prairie Meadows in early August. He now has earned $299,276 in his career.
“He’s always been a really great horse,” said Judy Lunderborg.
“It’s important to thank all the team,” added Bruce Lunderborg. “The folks in the barn, the people at the track, everyone involved. Having two horses like that are hard to come by. It’s really been great.”
The Lunderborgs bred both Dickey Bob and Pyc Jess Bite Mydust in Minnesota. Dickey Bob is trained by Jason Olmstead and was ridden to victory by Edwin Escobedo. He paid $2.40 as the odds-on favorite. Myownersbroke ($7.20) was second and Fire N Guns ($2.20) was third. He ran the 400 yards in 19.89.
Pyc Just Bite Mydust is in training again as well, though he won’t be taking aim at his brother again; he’s training to become a track pony as his next career.
Escobedo and Olmstead combined with Maudest Maven earlier to take the $23,400 1889 Futurity for horses bred in North and South Dakota.
The 2-year-old filly tried to make it as interesting as possible, taking a very circuitous route to the finish line. She did get there, however, and prevailed by a neck over Runaway Separtely and Relentless Dream despite finishing by the outside rail after breaking mid-pack.
She covered the 350 yards in 18:20 and paid $8.80 for the win.
