SHAKOPEE, MN – Jockey Denny Velazquez, 26, was summarily suspended by the stewards at Canterbury Park after being found to be in possession of a weapon without a permit on track grounds and an electrical device, commonly known as a “buzzer” or “machine” on July 20.
According to Minnesota statute, Section 240.25 , subdivision 4(1), no person may:
(1) on the premises of a licensed racetrack use, possess, or knowingly assist another person in using a battery or buzzer, electrical or mechanical, or other device or appliance, which can be used to affect a horse’s racing condition or performance, other than an ordinary whip;
Under Minnesota statute, tampering with horses with an electrical device is a felony.
Velazquez, a popular rider at the track, was having one of the best meets of his career, winning 20 of 90 starts placing him third in the jockey standings.
By rule, there will be a hearing with the stewards, tentatively scheduled for July 30. If the stewards find against him, they are limited to dispensing a 90-day suspension and/or a $5,000 fine. However, they can recommend a more stringent penalty which will need to be taken up by the full Minnesota Racing Commission in an open hearing. Only the Commission can levy harsher penalties. The steward’s hearing is scheduled to be closed to the public.
Velazquez could not be reached for comment.
