Canterbury Management, Horsemen Meet to Discuss Upcoming Barn Construction

SHAKOPEE, MN – Canterbury Park management held an open house Saturday afternoon to discuss the plans for the new barn set up and future development around the Shakopee racetrack.

“We have spoken with the horse organization boards numerous times in the past 6 months in regard to construction previously, but this was an effort to provide an opportunity for any horseperson to share feedback, ask questions or learn more about our plans for stable area modifications over the next several years,” said Andrew Offerman, Senior Director of Racing. “With a Minnesota Racing Commission Committee Meeting coming up on August 9, we believed it was imperative to provide this opportunity in advance of a public meeting.”

“It was a really good session, I thought,” said trainer Jerry Livingston.  “We got a lot of information and it showed Canterbury’s commitment to the future of racing.”

Renderings of the amphitheater development and ancillary projects were shown and discussed.

“I like that some of the development around the amphitheater is going to be horse and racing themed,” said trainer Larry Donlin. “It will be nice to keep the area about the horses and racing.”

Canterbury will start the process of demolishing the old barns and building the new right after the live racing season ends in September.

There will be a total of four new barns built with the potential to add more if capacity is needed. Construction will be taken in a phased approach with portions being built after the 2022, ’23 and ’24 racing seasons.

During the construction periods stall capacity will fluctuate, but there will be the ability to add temporary stall if they are needed. After the full build out, capacity would be 1,342 stalls.

“Both Randy Sampson and myself continue to encourage interested parties to stop and ask us questions about the forthcoming changes and we will certainly continue to provide updates as the approval process continues,” said Offerman.

Canterbury is scheduled to present their plans to the Minnesota Racing Commission later today, August, 9.  The link below will take you to the submission packet – public record from the MRC agenda.
