Canterbury Extended Family Rallies Around Canchari

Canterbury jockey colony and Leg Up Fund officials present check to the Canchari Family.

SHAKOPEE, MN – When Patrick Canchari’s car was plowed into early in the morning of St. Patrick’s Day as he was on his way to work at Turf Paradise, the initial assessment was not good.

“The prognosis was not good early,” said his sister Ashley Canchari.  “He really has made a lot of gains in the past six months.  They said it was going to be between 18 months and 2-years before we see the extent of his progress.”

The Canchari family was on hand to receive a check from the Leg Up Fund.  The Leg Up Fund is a 501c3 charity chartered to help jockeys injured at Canterbury Park.  Unable to donate their own funds, they leveraged their donation network to raise funds for Patrick’s recovery.

Additionally, owners Barry & Joni Butzow matched the contributions made to reach the final figure of $11,350.

“We have been so blessed by the amount of support we have received from everybody,” said Ashley. “The financial support, the good thoughts, the prayers all have helped us so much.  For example, one of Alex’s childhood friend’s, Jordon Gunhus, is a carpenter and has been helping us put in the wood floor for Patrick’s homecoming.”

Patrick is expected to be home the end of this month/beginning of October and will receiving care at home as well as heading to United Health for rehab sessions.

“We’ll have someone that will come into the home and help him,” explained Ashley. “His doctor recommended the outpatient rehabilitation clinic at United so he’ll be going back and forth there as well.

“He’s doing much better,” she added, “but he’s still day to day and there will be a lot of physical therapy and a lot of work ahead of him.”

Patrick’s needs are many: financial, emotional and physical.  Keep Patrick in your prayers and if you’d like to donate, here are some options:
